The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official in a social media post. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become part of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and European institutions.
