Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.

Flight Disruptions

The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.

Law Enforcement Actions

Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.

Up to 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.

Contraband Recovery

A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.

International Illegal Trade

Despite the disruption, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - cigarettes from Belarus - are not unusual in neighboring countries."

Since January, numerous meteorological balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.

Neighboring Country Impact

At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.

Smuggling Techniques

In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains especially affected by weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."

Border Protection Aims

Officials added that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."

European Tensions

The recent incidents occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.

Recent incidents in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
