Wimbledon Adopts Video Challenge System for the First Time.

The Championships court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to challenge certain decisions from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which terminated the 147-year role of line judges.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent incident took place in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and ruled the player was guilty of interference, granting the point to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.

In other news, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
